Rickwood Fan Donates Original 1956 Barons Team Cap

Please see write-up below regarding donation of an original 1956 Barons cap.  Thanks go to Jeb Stewart for the nice summary, and to Bob Bennett, for his generosity.

Long time Rickwood and Birmingham Barons enthusiast, Bob Bennett, recently donated a Barons cap, which was worn by Barons infielder, Fritz Brickell, during the 1956 season.  Bob worked for the Barons selling RC Colas during all home games. After games he would pick up seat cushions, and he occasionally got to shag fly balls during batting practice.  Fritz signed the cap for Bob; and Bob reports that he wore the cap for years as a young player.

Fritz batted .281 over 150 games for the Barons in 1956 and eventually played parts of three seasons in the major leagues.  Unfortunately, Fritz died of cancer at the age of 30 in 1965.  His player Bio from the SABR BioProject can be viewed here:  http://sabr.org/bioproj/person/95b775dc

The Friends of Rickwood wish to thank Bob Bennett for his tremendous generosity in donating the cap.  Old caps from the 1950s are rare indeed; and Fritz Brickell’s cap will be a permanent part of Rickwood’s collection and will eventually be on display, as we work to create a museum in the Rickwood conference room (formerly the Dugout Restaurant).
