Sam Hairston Celebration: Columbus, MS
The city of Columbus, MS will be hosting October 13-16, a celebration of Sam Hairston’s life and rich baseball legacy.
A veteran of the Negro Leagues and Rickwood Field (Birmingham Black Barons and Indianapolis Clowns), he is recognized as the first African-American ballplayer to be signed by the Chicago White Sox organization. Hairston spent 47 of his 53 years in baseball as a player, coach, and scout with the White Sox, including 12 years as a coach with the Birmingham Barons.
Planned celebration activities will include community and school events, appearances by national and local blues performers, and the dedication in-his-honor of a local ballpark.
