Birmingham to host the Jerry Malloy Negro League Conference

Our friend Larry Lester, leading Negro League scholar and all around great guy, provides the following information concerning the Jerry Malloy Negro League Conference, to be held in Birmingham July 15-17.

Dear Sports fan:

As some rush to file your taxes today, be mindful of this day in baseball history when Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier as a Brooklyn Dodger in 1947.

Today we have an opportunity to honor this historic breakthrough and the hundreds of men who started a “movement” to integrate America before there was a Civil Rights Movement.

That opportunity presents itself at the Jerry Malloy Negro League Conference, the “biggest and best black baseball conference in America.  This year we are in Birmingham, Alabama, from July 15-17, at the Sheraton Hotel. We will celebrate the 100th anniversary of Rickwood Field, the oldest ball park in the country, and the playground for more than 100 players currently in the National Baseball Hall of Fame.

At the conference we will announce the winners of our national $2,500 college scholarships and $1,000 library grants, along with a host of awards to researchers, historians and fans.

See the attached Top Ten Reasons for why you and your family should join this centennial celebration.  Feel free to forward the attachment to other fans of sports history.  (PDF file is below at end of post)

Don’t procrastinate.  Register today before all the good “seats” are gone. We guarantee a grand time with former players in attendance, a ball game, and scholarly presentations about this amazing chapter in American history.

Batter Up!
